it goes without saying that sc2 is a multi-player game first but i don't think any of us ever doubted that it would be an amazing multi-player game.

The single player on the other hand is a surprise.

This. I wasn't expecting the single player to be good at all. I was just going to play it for the sake of playing it. It actually felt fun and well-designed. That said, I'm done with it now and really only play it for online play. The game still refuses to put me in diamond.

Sorry but, people by this game for the insane multiplayer, not single. Its like bomberman.

i'm not stupid, it does not change the fact that most games are $50 and sc2 multiplayer is not really that much more "insane" compared to sc1. yes, it has a supposedly flexible map editor but that generates free content for blizzard, so why are they charging $10 extra? in fact, most of the work must go into single player, not multi. it's extremely easy to have multiplayer with replay value.

obviously i still like the game, but don't like it when they get expensive. i guess i'm a true chinese cheapskate because i often end up waiting until they're $20 to play them...i don't do that with big titles though (e.g. sc2, civ5)

Yups. I'm waiting for the battle chest to come out, which will be in like 6 years, which at that point I'd have bothered to upgrade my computer to play it.
Back on dumbass alert.

I'm proud to say that I was the first player in Germany to reach 100 zerg wins, primary because I had absolutely nothing else to do.

i'm not sure why you would have this opinion when they put so much effort into the map editor

and you aren't in diamond because you suck

but don't worry i'm going to lose all my ranking matches so i'll be in copper or whatever

A map editor with one of the worst custom map sharing possible for a Blizzard rts game in over 10 years. 5 map limit per map creator and can only search for most popular maps. Also, some stupidly small size limit on maps. =(

Hate to say this since I am a long term bliz player but I was actually really disappointed by SC2. They hyped the ever loving god out of the game (especially to their current player base in WoW) and everyone was expecting this magnificent game. Which if you never really played SC1 you got. If you did play SC1 a good deal you kinda realize that your basically still playing SC1 with a couple new units and a minor graphics update. I know I know, "if it's not broke don't fix it". But you still need to bring in something new to keep things fresh. SC2 failed to do that for me. I am also angry at blizz for being money whores and taking away the precious precious spawn install option for the game. Granted few people used it but the ones that did loved it. That spawn install is what made LAN tourneys possible which were a fucking blast back in the day.

i don't think that's true at all drak. i think this time around the multi-player is more fun.

i remember being depressed by the prevalence of muties and hydras for zerg, and dragoons for protoss after the brood war buff. You saw other units, but it was rare that you didn't see a lot of those units.

Now the only unit that seems like a no-brainer is the void-ray.

And I already said this above but I was really surprised by the quality of the single-player campaign.
Now the Lan concerns and the loss of spawn disc are pretty annoying, but when you compare this release to a game like John Madden football which changes less and yet you're expected to buy a new copy every season...

You have a valid opinion and I won't argue it. I just don't agree with it. Compared to some other things it is still a great release. But compared to the original SC it's a decent release just not great. I don't think it will hit full stride until the first expansion which is already in the pipeline. I will give it a shot then and reevaluate.

i was expecting to get my ass kicked more.

The TL&DR version of this is:
5 wins, 4 losses, placed in bronze to start but I've been beating players in higher leagues.

i lost my first 3 placement matches but upon watching the replay i realized that the first two were pretty close and the third one was a cheesy protoss gateway right outside my base that i failed to scout. Had I handled that properly I would've had a leg up on him.

Then the placement system apparently had already settled on putting me in bronze cause the next two guys I played were experienced bronze players and I beat them both.
I get placed in a new Bronze division. No big deal. I was 51st in the division by the time it got completely filled out.

Now I start playing real matches.
Win against a platinum player
Loss against a gold player
Win against a silver player
Win against a silver player

The only loss in there was actually a situation where i was still slightly ahead, but most of the army I had left after a big battle at his base was siege tanks and marauders and most of the army he had left after a concurrent big battle at my base was void rays. I GGd to save myself the pain of watching VRs whittle me down.

But now I'm a few days into it and I'm surprised at the low level of play I've been facing. I know from prior experience that there's going to be days when I run into effective scouting, 6 pools and reaper rushes and all that fun stuff, but so far nearly every match I've played has been against people who try to tech all the way up to BCs, Broodlords, Carriers, etc.. and I've been winning by pushing with MMM.

The last match was pretty satisfying.
I was T and he was Z on Kulas Ravine. I got 1 oclock and he got 5 oclock.
I mis-scouted him - getting cornered and losing an SCV to a roving pack of lings right outside the 8 oclock position.
He found me with his overlord and quickly brought his Zerglings to bear.
I had 2 marines out and more coming, but I chose to focus fire down his Overlord instead of defending my supply depot. I had an SCV repairing it and I figured it was worth the gamble to supply block him if I could pull it off.
It worked. Overlord went down, marines returned and picked off all the lings before they could bust down the supply depot.

As soon as that went down I teched to siege and grabbed the high ground expansion with the destructible rocks. My opponent went completely quiet and didn't even scout me. Big mistake for him. I wanted to harass him and figure out his army composition (scanner sweep doesn't always find everything ya know) so I built 5 banshees, cloaked, and took out an expansion hatch before he could respond. When he finally did respond it was with lots of hydras and he apparently hadn't looked at my units to see that they were cloaked, so I tore through a bunch of those before an overseer and a bunch of mutas drove me off.

So I gambled, I anticipated that he'd go heavy air. Corrupters, Mutas and the like. I expanded to gold and went heavy Thors. I was careful to hide the thors behind my lines but it wasn't necessary. He never scouted.
I still had those banshees so I cloaked them again and I attacked his expansion from the west. He got the Banshees without losing the expansion but he repositioned his entire army on the front door while I got ready to come in through the back.

At about 170 supply I came after him with an army of thors backed by vikings and marines. I had a hunch that broodlords would be coming so I also took every single SCV off my gold expansion and put them on auto repair. It was a risk to lose the production but I was pretty confident that this push would end the game.
My opponent had a huge army of corrupters that the vikings alone would've lost to but with Thor support they went down quick. I tore through them. There were a few mutas and hydras in the mix but not enough to damage the thors. It wasn't until about 5 broodlords came in from the west that I felt nervous at all but the SCVs kept most of the Thors alive and the Battlecruisers started to arrive at that moment. Lost most of my marines and most of my vikings but he had no choice but to GG.

There's no doubt that this guy wasn't a strong player but I still feel pretty good about the match because I didn't completely turtle. I went out of my way to harrass his production while I built my army and I used his lack of scouting against him to formulate an informed counter to his blind counter. Ironically he would've had a better chance against me if he'd simply massed hydras and lings.

He loses for the lack of scouting, and loses in general for letting it get to late game, zergs cannot let it get to late game especially if the player is not skilled. He should have 10 pooled and spawned a queen after the first 6 hit your base, if the first 2 pushes didn't work he should have teched up some gas to banelings or even a nydus. If that didn't work he shoulda gone for the expo and lisks. If that didn't work he was fucked because it's late game and zerg will always have a dissadvantage there.

i haven't seen banelings or nydus outside of high level replays yet.

i think banelings are essential units in many matchups and people just don't like to use them for some reason. banelings would've WRECKED me. My wall-in was minimally defended.

Thanks for reminding me about that. I would've gotten used to no banelings and then the first time i ran into someone who used them it would be gg.
