Been reading the "inheritance cycle" series. On the last one now. For those that don't know it's the "eragon" series.

Just finished the hunger games. I liked it well enough. I was afraid katniss would be either girl power or else maybe a testosterone laden girl like you see in so many comic books but instead she was a nice mix of capable, confident, vulnerable, some flaws and some qualities. She never seemed to think of herself as larger than life and she never did anything that a boy or girl might not be able to do for themselves with hard work and practice, but you can also see a believable hero buildup - mostly through little fault of her own.

Im not sure whether i like the first person perspective and i sometimes felt like the book was a little bit too straightforward. Im used to more indulgent authors. Tolkien for example was very straightforward except when it came to his own mythology. Anne rice, stephen king, frank herbert, robert jordan, george r r martin, they all had their own little pet themes.
I guess its not really a criticism. I just think the book could have been longer, more involved. Its pretty rapid and spare imho.

Aiight. Finished the other two books. Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

Mockingjay takes a lot of shit. Lots of people say it's the worst book and yeah I can kinda see why they'd say that but I think it depends on when you read it. To me it feels more like the second part of book 2. If you finished book 2 and took some time off and then came back to book 3 then I can see how it wouldn't feel very satisfying.
OTOH if you read them back to back then it's not too bad.

The themes are pretty blunt. Hunger Games is full of food references. Panem is straight from latin (bread and circuses). Peeta makes bread in a literal sense and he also provides emotional sustenance for Katniss. His name is a homonym for pita as well.

The best thing I can say is that you never want to put them down. There is no down-time.

It does still feel at times like blunt-force literature. Allegories for the dense. That's what you get with a book that's written for young adults. Still - 32 year old father and I enjoyed it. I did keep expecting Katniss to finally get intimate with one or the other of her boys and it never happened. Sex does not occur in this world.

I finished The Hunger Games on Sunday. I thought it was pretty decent...not quite as intense as Battle Royale though. Was in a rush to read it since I'll probably be seeing the movie soonish, not too eager to read the rest of them because of their reputation but I bought the trilogy for Kindle so I guess I'll get around to it some time (shortly before the movies come out :P)

Surely you nerds have been reading stuff. I picked up some reading again, I read Ready Player One, a nerdy book for nerdy people and Wool, a post-apocalyptic series

I was thinking about reading ready player one. Worth the effort?

I liked it, but there were some minor details that bugged me. I'm still a gamer so it was my kind of book.
